THE (NEGLIGIBLE) EFFECT OF ANTI-DUMPING DUTIES ON POULTRY PRICE

Minister Ebrahim Patel agreed with ITAC’s findings that several companies across Brazil, Denmark, Poland, Spain, and the US are dumping poultry products in South Africa, causing material harm to the domestic industry. The Minister also agreed with the remedial trade measures suggested by ITAC and the WTO: Anti-Dumping Duties. Unfortunately, the Minister delayed the implementation of these duties for a year in August 2022, citing consumer cost concerns. SAPA shares the Minister’s concerns, and commissioned Genesis Analytics to determine the effect of these duties on the consumer. Their findings? Duty passthrough is negligible at best.
